Southern Cooking and Southern Living…

I have been tooting my own horn for about two weeks now, y’all! I am so so so so honored that Southern Living chose to feature me in their Community Cookbook for January. I have been a subscriber of Southern Living for more than 20 years – back when my husband and I were eating canned tuna and Kraft Mac-n-Cheese and couldn’t afford the extra expense!

Both of my grandmothers loved getting Southern Living. I can recall many times my Nanny calling on the phone to ask if I had seen this recipe or that in the newest issue. Even my granddaddy read it – following the planting guides in the section about gardening in our particular part of the South each month. Funny how so many memories flood back to me just from Southern Living magazine.

During my early years of marriage – back before we owned a house or had children – I kept every single issue, with dog-eared pages of all the ideas I wanted for my future home and yard. Pages filled with exactly what I wanted my Southern home to look like, how it would be decorated, and how the landscape would be filled with all my favorite flowers.

Of course I LOVED the features on travel too (still do!). I dreamed of where my honeymoon would be and started a bucket list of all the Southern destinations I wanted to visit. I devoured the stories on quaint bed and breakfasts, sandy beaches filled with shells, and historic carriage tours in cities I had never been to.

I can’t talk about this magazine without mentioning what I think is the BEST part of Southern Living all these many years: the recipes! By far my choice of all time for discovering all kinds of new cuisine and old traditional recipes. After my husband finally decided I had collected more than my share of magazines, I turned to making a scrapbook of recipes that I clipped from pages of each month – there was always a few I just HAD to try! Even to this day, I will pull out that old blue notebook full of recipes and rediscover recipes I tried years ago. Imagine my delight that thousands of delicious Southern goodness is all digital now and right at my fingertips any time I need a tried and true recipe for coconut cake or scrimp scampi.

Even though we live in a digital world, I still like the feel of the printed magazine in my hands, turning pages to discover each exciting new idea or dish. And this issues was extra special – actually seeing my creation in print!
